BEGINNERS /NEW STUDENTS


HOW TO GET STARTED:

You are always welcome to drop into any class. However, if you are brand new to yoga, here are three options to begin your journey safely and competently:

1. Register for and take our “Introduction to Yoga” course

This is a 4 week course that meets once a week for 90 minutes. Class size is limited to 12 students and pre-registration is required.  A new session usually begins each month. Get all the details on the next session below.


This course is designed as a true entry-level guided class experience for those who are brand-new to yoga or returning after time away. Utilizing the Ashtanga Primary sequence as our syllabus, students will be introduced to the fundamental concepts of yoga in a meaningful, progressive manner. Students will learn about both the physical practice as well as the eight-limbed philosophy that transforms the physical practice into a transcendent spiritual journey.

Emphasis will be on anatomy; alignment; safe stretching techniques; how to use joints in the body properly; how to build strength; how to avoid injuries; how to breathe and synchronize the breath with movement; how to access and develop control of the bandhas; how to access and revise individual body maps; basic chanting; meditation techniques; and, of course, the postures of the Primary Series. Students will be provided with personalized modifications for poses that may be difficult to access.

Upon completion of the course, students will be prepared to enter the all classes at Surya Yoga and beyond depending on individual preference and teacher recommendation.

2. Mysore

Come and learn yoga the ancient way as it is still being taught today in Mysore India by the Sri K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute. Not your normal “led” class Mysore practice begins when you step onto your mat and flows at your own breath rate and ability.  Don’t be afraid as you’re not alone, there is a teacher who stands ready to assist, adjust, and instruct you one-on-one — thus Mysore is like having a private yoga lesson in a group setting. This means that your practice will be tailored to you. You will work to your body's unique capacity allowing it to open and strengthen at a pace uniquely appropriate to you. This is a fun way to practice and allows you to ask questions and receive feedback when you need it most, without feeling that you are interrupting a guided class. It is by far the safest, most effective method to learn yoga. Mysore classes usually run 2.5 hours and you can enter the room at anytime, roll our your mat and begin. Mysore is truly a custom tailored yoga experience that will empower you with a practice you can truly call your own.

If you are brand new to Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga and would like to learn in the traditional Mysore manner, a commitment of one month with a minimum attendance of three times per week is recommended.
